Die Houston Texans wurden im Jahr 1996 gegründet. 1997 zogen sie allerdings in einer Nacht-und- Nebel-Aktion nach Nashville, Tennessee. Als man sich 1997 dazu entschied die Anzahl der Teams in der NFL aufzustocken, hat sich auch unteranderem Houston darauf beworben, obwohl die Chancen eher schlecht standen da sich auch Los Angeles für das Auswahlverfahren beworben hatte. Los Angeles gewann zwar die Wahl konnten aber die Frist von 6 Monaten nicht einhalten, und so wurde dann letztendlich das Team für rund 700 Millionen US-Dollar an einen Milliardär nach Houston verkauft.
